God Grew Tired of Us- Blog #21

Part One:
1. 2 million people died.

2. Orphaned young men/boys who walked over a thousand miles to a refugee camp in Ethiopia, where they still are at today, since Sudan is still dangerous.

3. The war started because of oil and religion.

4. Muslim North and black Christian South.

5. Very harsh desert terrain and lack of food and water. Survived attacks from lions and hyenas and survived bombing raids from the North.

6. They had to leave again and had to move Kenya.

7. 5 years.

Part Two:
1. Don't use forks because they have never seen them.

2. To bury dead bodies of the lost boys.

3. In Kakuma, they slept on the ground, but in America they sleep on a comfortable mattress.

4. 3 months, after that, they need to work for themselves and pay them for their air travel.

5. What is the meaning of Santa and the Christmas Tree and how does it link to Jesus Christ.

6. Afraid to go ice skating.

7. John has two jobs. The first one is making gaskets at a factory. The second is flipping burgers at McDonalds.

8. Processes checks at a bank.

9. No time for family to be together. Hard schedules. People are not friendly. You can't go to random people's homes, like they could in Africa.

10. They think Americans are rude.

11. They feel worried when they enter the stores in large numbers.

12. They are lonely, they miss their friends and family.

Part Three:

1. I've learned that they have nothing over there, but they remain happy, they love their friends and family, they work hard for little income. They help anyone they can. A marker of Dinka culture would be them dancing. One of America would be the one going to college. The Lost Boys value helping other people before them, and even when they have nothing, to help other people first. In America. some people value that, but most of the time people value themselves more and care more about themselves more than others.
2. They fear people in the U.S. They think they are mean rude. They question  if they should work for their families and their safety of if they should go to school to become more educated. I would fear a lot of things if I moved to another country. I would fear people, working, and just normal life in that place. The culture and people and jobs are way more different, and it would be a lot to adjust to. I would question what job I should have, and the culture of that place. The Lost Boys encounter a lot of challenges. Even little things like going to the grocery store, or getting a job are very hard things because their culture is so much different but they overcome those things as they start getting used to the culture here at America. They adjust to the culture by getting used to the way things are over here, they make money, learn the language, eat the foods we eat and much more. It would take time but I would adapt by going to school at that place, and learn about everything that goes on over here.
3. Some aspects of our culture could be simple jobs or going to the store, or going ice skating, because even though they are simple things for us, they are difficult for them. So they could feel left out from things like those because they aren't used to those types of things.
4. The scene of John reuniting with his mom and sister stood out to me because it was so heart warming and just an awesome to see.
5. One thing that surprised me was how smart these people are. They adjusted super quickly to the crazy American culture, and that's just because they are super smart, and to me, it was surprising to see.
