Cultures of Mountains and the Sea
Main Idea: The roots of Greek culture are based on interaction of the Mycenaean, Minoan and Dorian cultures.
Why it Matters Now: The seeds of much of Western cultural heritage were planted during this time.

Geography Shapes Greek Life:
-Ancient Greece included 2000 islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas
The Sea: Greeks lived around a sea. Greeks rarely had to travel 85 miles to reach a coastline. The Aegean, Ionian, and Black Sea were important transportation routes for the Greek people. Sea travel and because Greek people lacked natural resources like timber, precious metals, and usable farmland.
The Land: Rugged mountains covered 3/4s of Ancient Greece. The Greeks developed small, independent communities within each valley and its surrounding mountains. Transportation was difficult. There were few roads because of uneven terrain. It took travelers several days to complete a journey that would only take a few hours today. Fertile valleys covered 1/4th of Greece. No more than a few million people lived in Greece at one time.
The Climate: Temp. averaged from 48 degrees F to 80 degrees F in the summer. Men spent most of their time outdoors where they discussed public issues, exchanged news, and took part in civic life.
